Water Safety and Best Practices

Swimming Matters is committed to enable a billion Indians to swim, adopting it not only as a sport but as a life skill and a life-saving skill that everyone should know. Through our partnerships and public awareness campaigns, we aim to create a well balanced, varied approach to swimming and water safety, encouraging experiences that will enhance their ability, enjoyment and their understanding of the water.

Our flagship initiative to promote water safety, “India SWIMS (Swimming and Water safety Is My Solution) to Prevent Drowning”, was launched in 2017. This initiative, led by Swimming Matters founder and Olympic swimmer Hakimuddin Habibulla was one of six Olympian led projects worldwide that was awarded the Service to Society Grant by the World Olympians Association. The other partners in this project were AUSTSWIM, Rashtriya Life Saving Society India (RLSS (I)) and Swimming Federation of India.

As per the World Health Organization, drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide. An estimated 20% of the world drowning incidents per year, i.e. approx. 75,000 deaths are said to occur in India. In India, water safety education was never addressed in any traditional learn-to-swim program at swim clubs or schools as the swim teachers themselves did not understand this aspect.

To address this issue, IndiaSWIMS brought together key stakeholders to promote water safety through the following:

  • Spread awareness by taking the #IndiaSWIMS to Prevent Drowning Pledge and spreading the same via social media
  • Creation and distribution of water safety information kits – containing water safety posters & placards for display on pool deck, messages from Olympian swimmers, water safety guidelines for students, etc. – to swim clubs and schools with swimming pools.
  • Water safety Engagement sessions in different parts of the country. Participation Certificates were given to children who attended the programs.
